US Establishes Advanced Attack Drone Squadron in Middle East After Decoding Iranian Technology

The US military has established its first one-way attack drone squadron in the Middle East in response to ongoing drone threats from Iran and its affiliates. This new formation, named Task Force Scorpion Strike, aims to enhance US military capabilities amid increasing threats from Iranian technology.

Introduction of LUCAS Drones

The squadron will utilize Low-cost Unmanned Combat Attack System, or LUCAS drones. These drones were developed by reverse-engineering a captured Iranian Shahed drone. This process was initiated after the US military intercepted the drone a few years ago.

Drones Tailored for Autonomy

The LUCAS drones possess an extensive operational range and are designed for autonomous missions. According to US Central Command (CENTCOM), these drones can be launched using various mechanisms, including:

  • Catapults
  • Rocket-assisted takeoff
  • Mobile ground and vehicle systems

Recent Drone Attacks in the Region

The need for these advancements is underscored by recent hostilities in the region. After the Hamas incursion into Israel on October 7, 2023, US bases faced a surge of drone attacks. Notably, one such attack in Jordan resulted in the deaths of three US service members.

During this period, Iran-backed groups, such as the Houthis, launched continuous assaults on commercial shipping in the Red Sea. Furthermore, in 2024, Iran targeted Israel with approximately 170 drones and over 120 ballistic missiles, most of which were intercepted by US forces.

US Defense Strategy Shift

In light of these developments, a US defense official stated that the previous emphasis on larger precision systems had created a disadvantage against cheaper drone technologies. However, with the introduction of the LUCAS drones, the approach is shifting.

Cost-Effective Drone Technology

Each LUCAS drone is estimated to cost around $35,000, significantly lower than many existing US weapons systems. While the exact number of drones in the new squadron remains undisclosed, a defense official described the inventory as “many,” with plans for additional units.

Task Force Details

Task Force Scorpion Strike comprises nearly two dozen personnel, predominantly from Special Operations Command – Central. Although not all members are stationed in the Middle East, this task force is focused on employing innovative strategies as a form of deterrence.

Adm. Brad Cooper, commander of CENTCOM, remarked that this new task force is crucial for leveraging innovation to bolster military readiness and responses in a complex threat environment.
