Nationwide Recall Alert: Shredded and Grated Cheese Varieties Under Safety Check

Shredded Cheese Recall

In early October, Great Lakes Cheese, an Ohio-based company, announced a recall involving six types of shredded cheese products. This decision was prompted by the discovery of possible metal fragments in the cheese.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classified this recall as Class II. This classification indicates that consumption of the affected products could lead to temporary or medically reversible health issues.

Affected Products and Distributors

The recalled shredded cheese is sold under various brand names at prominent retailers, including:

  • Target
  • Walmart
  • Publix
  • Aldi

These products were distributed across 31 states and Puerto Rico, including locations like California, Florida, New York, and Texas. The sell-by dates for these items extend into February and March 2026.

Specific Cheese Varieties Involved

The following types of cheese are part of the recall:

  • Low-moisture, part-skim shredded mozzarella under various brands
  • Italian-style shredded cheese blends
  • Shredded pizza-style cheese blends
  • Mozzarella and provolone shredded cheese blends
  • A mozzarella and Parmesan blend

A detailed list of products is available on the FDA’s website for consumer reference.

Pecorino Romano Recall Due to Listeria

The Ambriola Company, based in New Jersey, has issued a recall for its grated Pecorino Romano cheese products due to listeria contamination detected in routine testing. Although there have been no reported illnesses, the company decided to recall the products to ensure consumer safety.

Timeline and Brands Affected

The recalls for these cheeses occurred for products distributed between November 3 and 20. The impacted brands include:

  • Ambriola
  • Locatelli
  • Pinna
  • Boar’s Head
  • Member’s Mark

Expiration dates for these items range from February to May 2026, and they were sold in various retailers, including Walmart and Sam’s Club in multiple states.

Wegmans also initiated a recall for Locatelli-brand Pecorino Romano due to similar contamination concerns, affecting stores across several states.

Health Recommendations

The FDA advises consumers to dispose of or return the recalled cheese items for a refund. Those experiencing symptoms associated with listeria infection, such as fever or muscle aches, are urged to seek medical advice.

Ambriola has halted production and distribution of the affected products to conduct an extensive review of its safety practices.
