Murdoch University Manager Sentenced to Prison for Persistent Corrupt Behavior
A former manager at Murdoch University has been sentenced to prison for corrupt behavior involving the misappropriation of funds. Dario Pacifici, who served as facilities manager for 18 months, funneled over $1 million to a company associated with his wife and a close friend.
Dario Pacifici’s Corruption Case
Pacifici was employed by Murdoch University starting in March 2021. His misconduct came to light when the university’s Corruption and Crime Commission initiated an investigation. This revealed that Pacifici instructed staff to utilize the services of BM OnDemand Pty Ltd, a company he did not disclose his involvement in.
Details of the Misconduct
- Pacifici funneled contracts valued at $1.06 million to BM OnDemand.
- The company’s listed directors included Pacifici’s then-fiancé, now wife, Joshna Shrestha.
- Pacifici was charged with acting corruptly as a public officer.
- He bypassed standard tender processes, claiming to ensure reliability.
During the trial, Judge Charlotte Wallace criticized Pacifici’s attempts to downplay his actions. She emphasized that his conduct was strategic and motivated exclusively by greed. The court was informed that Pacifici approved payments for numerous invoices submitted by BM OnDemand.
Court Ruling and Sentence
Judge Wallace condemned Pacifici’s conduct as a serious breach of trust that has damaged Murdoch University’s reputation. She remarked on his persistent dishonesty and the harmful effects of his actions. Consequently, Dario Pacifici received a sentence of 2½ years in prison but is eligible for parole in March 2027.
Since his arrest, Pacifici and Shrestha have married and welcomed a son. This case highlights immense risks associated with corruption in public institutions and the need for rigorous oversight to maintain integrity.
