HSE Issues Apology to Couple Following Incorrect Fatal Foetal Abnormality Advice Leading to Pregnancy Termination

The Health Service Executive (HSE) is set to initiate an independent external review concerning a couple’s traumatic experience involving the termination of their pregnancy based on incorrect medical advice. This decision comes after the couple, Rebecca Price and Pat Kiely, were told their unborn child had a fatal foetal abnormality.

Background of the Case

The couple received tragic news in 2019 regarding their pregnancy. They were initially excited to learn on Christmas Eve in 2018 that they were expecting a child. However, following a series of medical tests, they faced devastating revelations about their baby’s health.

Medical Testing and Misdiagnosis

  • In February 2019, a normal ultrasound was conducted at Merrion Fetal Health Clinical.
  • A subsequent Harmony test indicated the presence of Trisomy 18, a serious chromosomal condition affecting the survival rate of infants.
  • A second ultrasound showed no abnormalities, yet a subsequent test indicated a possible Trisomy 18 diagnosis, leading to further medical consultations.

On March 11, 2019, Ms. Price was advised by her consultant, Professor Fionnuala McAuliffe, regarding the non-viability of the pregnancy due to the suspected fatal foetal abnormality. Based on this guidance, the couple made the heartbreaking decision to terminate the pregnancy three days later at the National Maternity Hospital.

Outcome of the Review and Apology

Following the termination, further testing revealed that the baby did not have Trisomy 18. This misdiagnosis led to significant emotional distress for the couple, prompting them to seek answers and advocate for a review of their case.

In a formal statement, HSE CEO Bernard Gloster expressed his sorrow over their loss and acknowledged the need for accountability and learning from this unfortunate incident. He met with the couple to offer a full apology, recognizing the deep pain they have endured.

Gloster confirmed intentions to finalize the details of the independent review, including appointing a qualified lead to oversee the examination of the care provided to the couple. He emphasized that their experiences will help enhance future healthcare practices.

Call for Inquiry

In 2021, after settling a High Court case against the National Maternity Hospital and involved parties, Ms. Price and Mr. Kiely publicly called for an inquiry into their experiences. They highlighted that the grief they face daily cannot be alleviated by any settlement, underscoring the profound impact of this medical error.

The establishment of an independent review aims to provide clarity and ensure that similar cases are addressed proactively, improving care for future patients.
