Half a Month’s Rain Expected in 24 Hours as Yellow Weather Warnings Are Issued
The UK is bracing for significant rainfall this week, with predictions of more than half a month’s rain falling within just 24 hours. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning effective from 6 PM on Monday, lasting for 24 hours. This alert covers areas in southwest England and Wales, extending to parts of Herefordshire and Hampshire.
Expected Rainfall Amounts
Forecasts indicate that certain regions may receive up to 40mm of rain, while Dartmoor and elevated areas in South Wales could see totals between 60mm and 80mm. This influx of rain could exceed half the average monthly rainfall typically recorded in December.
Impact on Travel and Flood Warnings
The anticipated rainfall will likely fall on already saturated ground, leading to challenging travel conditions. Currently, more than a dozen flood warnings are in effect across England, with two warnings in Scotland and one in Wales.
Weather Overview
In Northern Ireland, a separate yellow weather warning for rain is in place for Sunday, running from 8 AM to 3 PM. According to Steven Keates, the Met Office’s deputy chief meteorologist, a deep area of low pressure is expected to approach the UK from the southwest late Monday. This weather system will bring heavy rain and strong winds, impacting the region from late Monday through early Wednesday.
Ongoing Weather Concerns
The forecast for the remainder of the month suggests continued unsettled weather and several low-pressure systems could develop. The Met Office has indicated it is still too early to provide a precise forecast for the Christmas period.
Residents are advised to stay informed through the latest updates from the Met Office as the situation develops.
