Massive cleanup underway for banana containers on Sussex beaches
Efforts are currently underway to clear banana containers that washed ashore in West Sussex following an incident involving a cargo ship. On Saturday, 16 containers fell overboard from the Baltic Klipper, a vessel known for carrying soft fruits.
Incident Overview
The incident occurred at approximately 18:00 GMT off the Isle of Wight. Among the 16 containers, most were filled with bananas, while others contained avocados, plantain, or were empty. Subsequently, five containers have been reported on Selsey beach.
Response from Authorities
HM Coastguard, in collaboration with West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service and Sussex Police, has cordoned off the area around the containers. The public has been advised to avoid the vicinity. A coastguard helicopter, along with fixed-wing aircraft, is conducting aerial searches for additional containers still offshore.
Shipping Disruptions
The fallout from the container loss has caused disruptions in shipping movements. Notably, the P&O Cruises ship Iona experienced delays in its departure from Southampton due to obstructions in the water.
Safety Measures and Reporting
- The Maritime & Coastguard Agency has issued warnings to ships navigating the Solent.
- All cargo that washes ashore must be reported to HM Coastguard’s Receiver of Wreck.
- Individuals failing to declare items within 28 days may face legal repercussions; however, perishable goods are exempt.

Expert Insights
Steve Wenham, with experience from ferries in the Solent, indicated that the Baltic Klipper typically operates monthly routes from the Caribbean or West Africa. He noted that containers that have sunk should not pose a problem, but those remaining afloat are hazardous.
West Sussex County Council has engaged response teams to commence cleanup operations. As citizens await recovery efforts, they are reminded to adhere to the guidance provided by local authorities.
