The Iona, a cruise ship operated by P&O Cruises, experienced a departure delay from Southampton due to the incident. Originally set to sail on Saturday, the ship eventually departed on Sunday at 1 PM. Iona has the capacity to accommodate 5,200 passengers, and it is on a 14-day journey to Spain, Portugal, and the Canary Islands.
Details of the Cargo Incident
On December 6, 16 containers fell overboard from the Baltic Klipper while navigating the Solent. An official from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) confirmed the ongoing collaboration with relevant entities for the recovery efforts.
- Eight containers were reported to carry bananas.
- Two containers contained plantains.
- One container held avocados.
- Five containers were empty.
As a precaution, two of the containers washed ashore at Selsey. Local authorities have established a safety cordon around the area, with Coastguard rescue teams from Selsey and Littlehampton present. The West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service and Sussex Police are also assisting with the situation.
