Offaly Home Fire Attack Claims Lives of Woman and 4-Year-Old Boy as Murder Investigation Begins
Emergency services responded to a fire in Castleview Park, Edenderry, Co Offaly, on the evening of December 6, 2025. The incident occurred shortly before 7:45 PM. Tragically, the fire resulted in the deaths of two individuals: a 60-year-old woman, Mary Holt, and a four-year-old boy, Tadhg Farrell. A second woman, in her 50s, was rescued and is presently hospitalized with serious injuries.
Murder Investigation Initiated
An Garda Síochána has launched a murder investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deadly house fire. According to a police spokesperson, the residence has been declared a crime scene and is undergoing a thorough examination by the Garda Technical Bureau. The local coroner and the State Pathologist have also been notified.

- The remains of the deceased were removed and will undergo post-mortem examinations conducted by the Assistant State Pathologist Margot Bolster at the Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore.

Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan condemned the “deliberate callous attack” resulting in the loss of lives, including that of a young child. He urged anyone with information to come forward. Local Edenderry councillor Claire Murray-Smale described the event as a “horrific tragedy,” offering condolences to the families involved. Similarly, Independent councillor Fergus McDonnell expressed shock and sadness, describing it as a “horrendous” day for the community.

Gardaí are calling for witnesses who were in the vicinity of Castleview Park or surrounding roads between 7 PM and 8 PM on the night of the tragedy. They are particularly interested in anyone who may have dashcam footage or any relevant information.
