Last Chance to Claim Your Share in Loblaw Bread Price-Fixing Settlement This Week

The deadline is approaching for Canadians to claim their share of the Loblaw bread price-fixing settlement. Eligible residents who purchased packaged bread from Loblaw stores between January 1, 2001, and December 31, 2021, can submit claims. The Superior Court of Quebec and the Ontario Superior Court of Justice have approved a substantial $500 million settlement related to this class-action lawsuit.

Settlement Details

The claims period began on September 11, 2023, and will last until December 12, 2025. The lawsuit alleges that Loblaw overcharged consumers due to a price-fixing scandal involving several packaged bread products. Similar class actions are currently in progress against Canada Bread, Sobeys, Metro, Walmart Canada, and Giant Tiger.

Who is Eligible?

  • Canadian residents who purchased packaged bread from Loblaw.
  • Eligibility extends to purchases made between January 1, 2001, and December 31, 2021.
  • No proof of purchase is required.
  • Those who received a $25 Loblaw card can still submit a claim.

Packaged bread includes various products like bagged bread, buns, rolls, bagels, naan, English muffins, wraps, pita, and tortillas, excluding frozen bread and items baked on-site at supermarkets.

Compensation Amounts

The settlement dictates that Weston and Loblaw must pay an additional $404 million, having already contributed $96 million through prior programs. Class members in Quebec will receive 22 percent of the total settlement, while 78 percent will go to members from other provinces. The actual compensation will depend on multiple factors, including the total number of claims and available funds.

How to Submit a Claim

Eligible individuals can start their claims by completing an online form. The required details include:

  • Full name
  • Date of birth
  • Address
  • Contact information
  • A verification question to confirm eligibility
  • Indication of whether a $25 Loblaw Card was received in 2018

For those residing in Quebec, claims must be submitted on a dedicated platform. It is worth noting that the processing of claims may take some time, with payments expected to occur in 2026. Compensation typically follows six to twelve months after the claims period concludes.

Jim Orr, a partner at Orr Taylor LLP, remarked on the settlement, stating, “This resolution provides Canadian consumers with the monetary relief they deserve.”
