HSA and ESB Networks Collaborate to Enhance Workplace Electricity Safety
The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) has teamed up with ESB Networks to launch a safety campaign aimed at reducing electrical hazards in workplaces. This initiative was announced on November 25, 2024, in response to a significant rise in unsafe practices reported by ESB Network Technicians.
Heightened Concerns Over Workplace Electrical Safety
In 2024, there was a 40% increase in the number of Stop Work Notices issued by ESB Networks. These notices are critical tools used to halt operations when unsafe conditions surrounding live electrical infrastructure are identified. Such risks are particularly prevalent near overhead lines and underground cables.
Expert Insights on Safety Measures
Greg Beechinor, a Senior Inspector at the HSA, emphasized the urgency of addressing these issues. He stated, “Working near ESB Networks infrastructure can present a serious risk if not managed correctly.” Employers are reminded to engage with ESB Networks before starting work near their facilities to create a secure working environment.
Claire Mulholland, the Public Safety Manager at ESB Networks, reiterated the importance of raising awareness. She noted that many accidents related to the electricity network could be prevented through proper communication and planning. “If you are planning work near ESB Networks infrastructure, please talk to us first,” she urged.
Campaign Objectives and Target Audience
The joint initiative aims to inform employers, contractors, and workers in all sectors who may interact with ESB Networks infrastructure. This includes areas such as:
- Overhead lines
- Underground cables
- Mini-pillars
- Meters
The campaign serves as a reminder about the significance of planning and consulting with ESB Networks before undertaking any project near these structures.
Guidelines for Safe Working Practices
All activities conducted near ESB Networks infrastructure must comply with established Codes of Practice. These include:
- Code of Practice for Avoiding Danger from Overhead Electricity Lines
- Code of Practice for Avoiding Danger from Underground Services
Employers and workers are strongly advised to adhere to the following safety protocols:
- Never interfere with ESB Networks equipment, including meters, lines, and cables.
- Contact ESB Networks at 1800 372 757 before any planned work.
- In case of emergency, call ESB Networks at 1800 372 999.
- Visit Emegypt for further guidance on workplace electrical safety.
As part of the campaign, the HSA and ESB Networks will utilize social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn to disseminate important safety messages widely.
