Storm Bram Hits Wexford: Power Outages, Fallen Trees, and Bridge Closures Affect Thousands
Storm Bram has significantly impacted County Wexford, causing widespread disruption. Fallen trees and power lines have blocked several roads across the region, leading to power outages for thousands.
Power Outages in Wexford
At the height of the storm, approximately 10,000 homes and businesses experienced power outages. The largest outage occurred in Bellefield, Enniscorthy, affecting 2,577 customers. Additional outages were reported in:
- Scarawalsh – 1,237 affected
- Ballycullane – 1,745 affected
- Other areas with smaller outages included Kilmore, Rosslare, and parts of Gorey, including Ballymoney and Courtown.
Road Closures and Disruptions
Several roads have been completely or partially blocked due to fallen trees and power lines. Key closures include:
- Between Baldwinstown and Bridgetown – completely blocked by a fallen tree and power lines.
- Newline Road at Coolbrook – blocked near Wellingtonbridge.
- Roads partially blocked at Cushinstown and between Taghmon and Larkin’s Cross.
In New Ross, the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Bridge was closed to traffic, with diversions implemented.
Safety Warnings and Flood Concerns
The Electric Supply Board (ESB) has issued warnings about the dangers of fallen live wires. They advise the public and emergency services to maintain a safe distance from fallen cables and report such incidents by calling their emergency hotline at 1800 372999. Their powercheck website provides real-time updates on restoration efforts.
While fears of flooding in Bridgetown were prevalent, local councillor Jim Codd reported a positive update. “The tide is falling in Bridgetown,” he noted, indicating that the village has largely avoided flooding on this occasion. Nevertheless, high winds from the southwest continue to pose risks along the coastline.
Community Response
Reports of localized flooding were noted near the community center in Castlebridge, where water levels rose around parked vehicles. Wexford County Council emphasized the potential for serious flooding and high winds prior to Storm Bram.
Residents are advised to exercise caution and remain vigilant. For any storm-related incidents or updates, the public can report details and share photos with the local authorities.
