Lions Triumph Over Cowboys Shatters Amazon Prime Viewership Record
The game attracted an average of 19.39 million viewers, marking it as the most-watched “Thursday Night Football” broadcast since Amazon began streaming these events. This was a significant increase compared to the previous record of 17.76 million viewers set earlier this season.
Viewership Peaks and Comparison
- Game Details: Lions vs. Cowboys
- Date: December 4
- Average Viewers: 19.39 million
- Previous Record: 17.76 million (Commanders vs. Packers on September 11)
- Peak Viewership: 22.18 million
- Year-over-Year Increase: 12% from last year’s Lions-Packers game (17.29 million)
Amazon Prime Video’s “Thursday Night Football” is also seeing a notable rise in overall viewership. The platform now averages 15.20 million viewers per game, up 15% from the previous season’s 13.20 million. Additionally, a Black Friday matchup between the Chicago Bears and Philadelphia Eagles had 16.33 million viewers on average.
New Measurement Methodology
One reason for the increased viewership may be related to Nielsen’s updated measurement methods. Starting from September 1, Nielsen employed its Big Data + Panel approach to assess all events. This new methodology includes measurements of out-of-home viewers in all states except Hawaii and Alaska.
Furthermore, Nielsen has expanded its data collection to include smart TVs alongside traditional cable and satellite boxes. This adjustment allows for more comprehensive reporting beyond the previous focus on the top 44 media markets, which only accounted for 65% of the U.S. population.
The Lions’ victory and the accompanying viewer statistics illustrate a significant milestone for both the team and Amazon’s streaming service, solidifying the popularity of NFL matches on the platform.
