Michel Therrien Takes the Helm Leading Canada in Spengler Cup
Michel Therrien is set to return to coaching in a prestigious role, leading Canada’s national team at the upcoming Spengler Cup. Hockey Canada announced this appointment on Thursday. Therrien’s selection comes from Marc Bergevin, the general manager, who has a history of collaboration with Therrien.
Background of Michel Therrien
At 62, Therrien brings a wealth of experience to the bench. He previously coached the Montreal Canadiens, first from 2000 to 2003, and then again from 2012 for four and a half seasons. He also led the Pittsburgh Penguins from 2005 to 2009. Most recently, Therrien served as an assistant coach with the Philadelphia Flyers from 2019 to 2022.
Coaching Staff and Team Composition
Joining Therrien as part of the coaching staff are two other Quebec natives:
- Patrice Lefebvre: An assistant coach currently leading the HC Forward team in Morges, Switzerland.
- Jérémy Coupal: Serving as the video coach, having previously held the same role in the NHL with the Nashville Predators and Edmonton Oilers.
Drew Bannister and Rob Cookson will also be part of the coaching team.
Spengler Cup Details
The Spengler Cup is a historic tournament held annually in Switzerland during the holiday season. The 2023 edition is set to commence on December 26. Therrien takes the reins following notable predecessors, including Gerard Gallant (2024), Bruce Boudreau (2023), Travis Green (2022), and Claude Julien (2021).
