USC Trojans Football Could Relocate 2028 Home Games to SoFi Stadium Due to Olympics at Coliseum
The USC Trojans are considering a temporary relocation for their home football games in 2028. This move is primarily due to the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, which will take place in Los Angeles.
Potential Move to SoFi Stadium
USC football, a staple at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum since 1923, faces a unique challenge. The Coliseum will host both the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympics, as well as track and field events during the summer. To accommodate this, USC may relocate its home games to SoFi Stadium for that season.
Conflict with Olympic Schedule
- The 2028 Olympics will occur from July 14 to July 30.
- The Paralympics will run until August 27, just before the college football season starts.
An essential part of the planning involves the installation of a temporary track over the Coliseum’s existing field. If the track can be removed without causing damage to the playing surface, there is a chance USC could still host games at the Coliseum.
Awaiting Feasibility Study Results
The university is currently waiting for the findings of a feasibility report conducted by the Coliseum and LA28, the organizing committee for the Olympics. The results will play a vital role in determining where USC will play its home games in 2028.
SoFi Stadium’s Role
If USC does move to SoFi Stadium, it will not be alone. Currently, the stadium serves as the home turf for the Los Angeles Rams and the Los Angeles Chargers. Additionally, UCLA is expected to join as a tenant, leading to a potentially busy season with four teams sharing the venue.
Should the move to SoFi happen, it would mark a significant shift in Trojan football history. The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum has hosted numerous iconic events, being the only venue to have hosted three Olympic Games. As USC navigates these changes, the outcome will reshape the future of football in Los Angeles.
