Parish Forum Highlights Key Milestones in Local Government Overhaul
The local government overhaul in Hertfordshire is making significant strides, as discussed in the latest parish forum meeting. Key representatives from parish and community councils in Three Rivers recently gathered to explore crucial developments and proposals.
Key Highlights from the Parish Forum Meeting
The meeting took place on Monday, December 1, at the district council’s head office in Rickmansworth. It was led by Cllr Stephen Giles-Medhurst OBE, the Leader of Three Rivers District Council. The session aimed to inform parish representatives about the ongoing changes in local government.
Local Government Reorganisation Details
One of the main topics was the Local Government Reorganisation. Every council in Hertfordshire has submitted its preferred model. This reorganization plan proposes the dissolution of existing county, district, and borough councils. The goal is to establish new unitary councils across the region, with Three Rivers advocating for the creation of three separate unitary councils.
Local Plan Update
An update on the Local Plan was also on the agenda. This document is vital for guiding future development proposals in Three Rivers, including housing and associated infrastructure. The plan addresses economic employment needs alongside the future housing strategy.
Consultation with Local Residents
Additionally, the forum discussed ongoing consultations targeting residents in the unparished areas of Penn, Mill End, Maple Cross, and West Hyde. These consultations aim to ascertain whether the residents wish to establish a local parish council, merge with an existing one, or remain without a parish council.
Collaborative Engagement
Cllr Giles-Medhurst emphasized the importance of engaging with parish and community councils throughout this process. The parish liaison meetings, initiated 18 months ago, serve as a collaborative platform for the district council and parishes to ensure open communication and shared objectives.
- Date of the meeting: December 1
- Location: District Council head office, Rickmansworth
- Key Proposal: Establishment of three unitary councils in Hertfordshire
- Ongoing Consultations: Feedback from unparished areas regarding local governance
As the local government reorganisation progresses, it is crucial for community councils to participate actively. Their involvement will help shape the future of local governance in Hertfordshire.
