GoVolta launches open-access train operations to enhance travel accessibility
GoVolta, a new Dutch private train operator, is set to launch open-access international train services. The inaugural operations are scheduled to commence on March 19, 2026, with routes linking Amsterdam to Berlin and Hamburg.
Launch of Open-Access Train Services
During a press conference held in Breda on December 8, 2025, GoVolta announced its plans to enhance travel accessibility through affordable train journeys. The first service to Berlin will depart from Amsterdam Centraal on March 19, 2026. The following day, the train to Hamburg will begin its journey.
- Amsterdam – Berlin: Runs three times a week (Tuesday, Thursday, Sunday).
- Amsterdam – Hamburg: Operates three times a week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday).
Both routes will eventually be upgraded to daily service during summer 2026. The Amsterdam – Hamburg route will stop at several key locations, such as Amersfoort Centraal and Bremen Hbf, before reaching its destination at Hamburg-Harburg. Meanwhile, the Amsterdam – Berlin service will include stops at Amersfoort, Bad Bentheim, and Osnabrück Hbf, concluding at Berlin Gesundbrunnen, with a future terminus planned for Berlin Spandau.
About GoVolta
GoVolta was founded by Hessel Winkelman and Maarten Bastian, both of whom have significant experience in the railway industry. Their previous venture, Green City Trip, offered charter night train services across Europe. With GoVolta, they intend to focus on daytime travel.
Bastian emphasized their mission to simplify train travel, making it easier for people to choose trains over cars or planes. GoVolta promises affordable tickets with a seat guarantee and full-service city trip options.
Ticketing and Pricing
Ticket sales commenced live at the press conference, with an immediate demand evident as 452 tickets were sold within the first hour. Fares start at €10, with the average cost per single trip expected to be around €30. The pricing structure includes:
- 10% of seats available at €10.
- Complimentary hand luggage for two pieces; larger luggage incurs additional fees.
Passengers can book tickets through the GoVolta website or via various ticketing channels, such as DB and travel agencies. The service will initially be available exclusively for international passengers, as domestic rail competition is restricted by law in the Netherlands.
Rolling Stock and Operations
GoVolta has acquired Type I10 second-hand coaches from SNCB, starting operations with 11 coaches, including:
- 2 first-class Comfort coaches.
- 8 second-class Economy coaches.
- 1 lounge coach for onboard services.
In total, the fleet will accommodate 820 passengers, with plans to expand this offering in the future.
Future Plans
GoVolta has ambitious plans for expansion, including services to Paris that avoid high-speed tracks, beginning in December 2026. Potential routes via Belgium and northern France are under consideration. The company also aims to establish connections between Amsterdam and cities like Frankfurt, Basel, and Copenhagen in the long term.
The name GoVolta symbolizes speed and energy, referencing Alessandro Volta, the inventor of the galvanic battery. The brand aims to deliver a contemporary, affordable alternative for international train travel.
