Yungblud Creates Rock Music with Depth Over Dopamine
Yungblud continues to make waves in the rock music scene, achieving notable milestones in 2023. Recently, he collaborated with legendary band Aerosmith on a new EP titled “One More Time.” Alongside this, he garnered three Grammy nominations, recognizing his solo album “Idols,” the single “Zombie,” and his poignant rendition of Black Sabbath’s “Changes” during their farewell concert this past summer.
Reflection on “Idols”
In an interview with Q’s Tom Power, Yungblud reflected on the inspiration behind his album “Idols.” He described it as a journey of self-discovery, where he explored the importance of looking inward for answers rather than relying on external idols. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to meet and perform with some of his musical heroes throughout the year.
Musical Roots in Doncaster
Yungblud’s connection to rock music began in his childhood, largely influenced by his experiences in his grandad’s guitar shop in Doncaster, U.K. This shop was a hub for rock legends and aspiring musicians alike, with visitors including Noel Gallagher, Johnny Marr, and Bryan Adams.
Despite the rich musical environment, Yungblud faced skepticism from those around him. “My dad and granddad were almost like the grim reapers for musicians that couldn’t catch a break,” he said. He learned from those in the shop about the challenges of the music industry, which shaped his determination to pursue a career as an artist.
A Commitment to Artistic Integrity
Throughout the process of creating “Idols,” Yungblud vowed to maintain his artistic vision. Unlike his previous self-titled album, he aimed for “depth not dopamine” in his music. He rejected the notion of conforming to the mainstream music trends that often prioritize catchy, short-form songs.
- Focus on longer compositions and meaningful lyrics
- Rejection of modern music formulas and playlisting pressure
- Emphasis on creating music that resonates with one’s soul
Yungblud’s belief is that genuine creativity leads to fulfilling outcomes. “When you make a record from your soul and your heart, you kind of can’t lose,” he stated, affirming his commitment to authenticity in his work.
Looking Ahead
As he closes out this transformative year, Yungblud’s journey serves as an inspiration to artists everywhere. With his enriching experiences and artistic endeavors, he continues to carve a unique space in the rock genre.
