The Greyfriars project is a major element of the £22.6 million government investment through the Bedford Town Deal. Collaboratively executed by the Government, Bedford Borough Council, and local stakeholders, this initiative focuses on creating a vibrant and accessible town centre.

The improvements at Greyfriars Junction are designed to foster safer travel for pedestrians and cyclists. The scheme also includes provisions for current and future bus transport. The Council is actively coordinating with local bus operators to minimize service disruptions.
Samantha Laycock, Chair of the Bedford Town Deal Board, emphasized the project’s role in making Bedford a vibrant community. “This project exemplifies our commitment to transforming Bedford into a more sustainable town,” she noted.
Councillor Andrea Spice, Portfolio Holder for Economic Growth, highlighted the importance of this key approach to the town centre. “These enhancements will improve accessibility and quality of life,” she stated.
Preserving Local Heritage
The historical Italian Statue currently located at the roundabout will be restored, and a new site will be designated for its future display. This move reflects the commitment to preserving local heritage while upgrading the area.
Community Engagement Initiatives
Residents and businesses have the opportunity to stay informed about the developments. Public engagement stalls will be held throughout the project timeline. The next event is scheduled for Thursday, December 18, from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM, near the old Police Station.
