Exciting Update Green Light Approved for Bedford Universal Studios Theme Park
The government has officially approved a significant development for a new Universal theme park and resort at Kempston Hardwick, Bedford. The announcement was made via a letter from Communities Secretary Steve Reed, stating that a Special Development Order (SDO) has been laid before Parliament. This order will come into effect on January 12, 2026.
Overview of the Project
The new Universal Studios theme park will cover approximately 268 hectares. It is designed as an “Entertainment Resort Complex” and will include:
- One or more theme parks
- Visitor accommodations
- Retail and dining options
- Sports and conference facilities
- Landscaping and utility infrastructure
Transport Enhancements
The Special Development Order also facilitates major transport upgrades to improve access to the park:
- New entrances and exits from the A421
- Expansion of the train station at Wixams on the Thameslink/Midland Main Line
- Upgrades to Manor Road and other local roadways
Visitor Impact and Economic Boost
The project is anticipated to draw between 8.5 and 12 million visitors each year. It is expected to have a profound impact on the local economy, generating substantial inward investment and creating around 20,000 jobs during its construction phase alone. Mayor Tom Wootton highlighted the decision as a pivotal moment for Bedford and expressed optimism about the opportunities the park will present.
Community Support and Future Plans
Page Thompson, President of New Ventures for Universal Destinations & Experiences, acknowledged the local community’s support throughout the planning process. He emphasized the importance of feedback from Bedford residents and other stakeholders.
Bedford Borough Council estimates that the project could contribute approximately £50 billion to the economy over its lifetime. The resort is expected to become one of the largest employers in the area, with a commitment to hiring locally.
Government and Community Reactions
Local MP Mohammad Yasin hailed the government approval as a transformative milestone for Bedford. He noted the development’s potential to enhance job opportunities and bolster the local economy through improved infrastructure.
However, concerns were raised by local officials regarding the need for protections to ensure that residents benefit from the development. Councilor Paul Edmunds called for careful planning to secure affordable housing and adequate infrastructure from the outset.
As the Special Development Order comes into effect, more details about the timeline and conditions of the project are expected to be revealed. This investment marks a significant step forward for Bedford, positioning it as a key player in the UK’s entertainment and tourism sectors.
