India Criticizes Pakistan at UNSC for Jailing Prime Ministers While Granting Army Chief Lifetime Immunity
India has expressed strong criticism of Pakistan during a recent UN Security Council session. Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, Permanent Representative of India to the UN, condemned Islamabad’s approach towards its political leaders and its military. This statement was made on December 15, 2025, as part of the ongoing dialogue about ‘Leadership for Peace.’
India’s Stance on Pakistan
During the session, Pakistan’s Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad raised issues related to Jammu and Kashmir and the Indus Waters Treaty. Harish countered by accusing Pakistan of harboring a “divisive agenda” aimed at undermining India. He emphasized that Pakistan’s references to Jammu and Kashmir display an obsessive focus on harming India.
Allegations Against Pakistan
- India criticized Pakistan for jailing former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who has been in custody since August 2023.
- Harish referred to the 27th Constitutional Amendment, which grants lifetime immunity to Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces.
- UN Special Rapporteur on Torture Alice Jill Edwards highlighted the concerning treatment of Imran Khan, calling for action on his detention conditions.
Immediate Concerns
Harish highlighted that India will counter any form of terrorism sponsored by Pakistan. He rejected the Pakistani envoy’s claims regarding the settlement of the Jammu and Kashmir issue, stating that Pakistan’s governance approach does not genuinely respect the will of its populace.
Indus Waters Treaty and Terrorism
Harish reiterated India’s long-standing commitment to the Indus Waters Treaty, established 65 years ago. However, he asserted that Pakistan has failed to honor the treaty’s spirit, mentioning the historical context of three wars and numerous terror attacks perpetrated by Pakistan.
Recent Attacks and Warnings
- In April 2025, a tragic attack in Pahalgam led to the deaths of 26 civilians, underscoring ongoing security challenges.
India concluded by stating that the treaty would be suspended until Pakistan ceases its support for terrorism. Harish reinforced that Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are integral parts of India.
This critical exchange signifies heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, particularly regarding political stability and security issues in South Asia.
