A recent success story has emerged from the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, highlighting the incredible abilities of K9 Officer Bubba, a four-year-old bloodhound. Within four months, Bubba has been instrumental in locating two missing individuals, showcasing the significant role of trained police dogs in community safety.

Officer Bubba, known for his playful nature, is guided by Officer Tyrone Campbell. Campbell has been part of the Metropolitan Police Department for over ten years and has served as a K9 handler for about a year. Together, they have made notable strides in locating missing persons.

Recent Case of a Missing Man

Recently, D.C. police were alerted to a critical situation when a man went missing from his caregiver’s residence on Constitution Avenue. Due to his health conditions and the treacherous cold, he was deemed critically missing. The department quickly deployed its helicopter, Falcon 1, while officers conducted ground searches.

In an impressive display of ability, Bubba picked up the man’s scent using a vacuum that collects particles from personal items like clothing or pillows. Within just seven minutes, Bubba successfully led Officer Campbell to the missing man, who was located approximately four blocks away.

Expertise and Training of K9 Officers

Officer Campbell expressed amazement at Bubba’s skills, noting that the dog’s ability to differentiate scents is remarkable. “I wasn’t a big believer before,” Campbell admitted, “but experiencing it firsthand has been incredible.” This method allows Bubba to effectively eliminate potential matches and hone in on the individual being searched for.

A Growing K9 Unit

Previously the sole bloodhound with the D.C. police, Bubba will soon be joined by another bloodhound named Bonzo. Bonzo is currently in training and is expected to hit the streets in the next couple of months. His handler, Officer James Greene, has nearly two decades of experience in the K9 Unit and has been with the department for 28 years.

Greene praised Officer Campbell’s efforts in building the K9 program, stating, “He has hit the ground running.” The addition of Bonzo aims to enhance the department’s ability to locate missing persons, as bloodhounds are trained to track scents up to 24 hours after an individual has gone missing.

For Officer Campbell, working alongside Bubba is not just a job but a fulfilling way to give back to the D.C. community. “It means a lot to me to bring hope to families searching for their loved ones,” he shared.

The D.C. Metropolitan Police Department maintains a diverse array of canines for various tasks, including narcotics and explosives detection. However, Bubba and Bonzo are the only bloodhounds specifically trained for tracking missing persons and suspects.
