Two-Day Cold Snap Brings Freezing Temperatures and Winter Rain Across South Korea This Weekend
A two-day cold snap is impacting South Korea, bringing freezing temperatures and winter rain across various regions this weekend. Entering Saturday, the country is experiencing a significant drop in temperature, particularly in the inland areas.
Current Weather Conditions
Temperatures have plummeted in many regions. As of 7 AM, Pyeongchang in Gangwon Province recorded the lowest morning temperature at -10.3°C. Other areas have also faced severe cold:
- Gyeongbuk, Gimcheon: -8.4°C
- Chungbuk, Jecheon: -7.8°C
- Seoul: -0.7°C
Forecast for the Weekend
While the cold snap is expected to ease Saturday afternoon, winter rain is forecasted to begin early in the day. Rain will initially fall in central regions, Honam, and Jeju Island before spreading nationwide:
- Expected rainfall:
- Capital region and central areas: Less than 5 mm
- Jeju Island: 5-20 mm
- South Jeolla coast: 5-10 mm
- Gwangju, Busan, and Ulsan: Around 5 mm
Strong winds are also anticipated, with gusts up to 20 m/s in the mountainous regions of Gangwon. Most of the country will see winds reaching 15 m/s, which could create hazardous conditions.
Precautions During Cold Snap
With temperatures expected to drop below freezing again by Sunday, authorities advise caution for pedestrians and drivers. Rain could freeze on the roads, increasing the risk of accidents. The Korea Meteorological Administration has warned that cold weather will persist into early next week, with another round of rain expected on Tuesday and Wednesday.
As South Korea braces for the continued impact of this cold snap, residents are urged to prepare for swift changes in weather conditions.
