BC Mountain Highways Hit by Heavy Snow – Latest BC News
Highway conditions in British Columbia’s Mountain region are concerning due to heavy snowfall and previous damage from a storm. Crews are actively working to repair Highway 3, which connects Hope and Princeton, following significant damage from an atmospheric river that occurred on December 10.
Damage Assessment on Highway 3
Recent assessments have revealed new damage on Highway 3. Authorities noted that 22 sites along this corridor were impacted by the storm, with eleven experiencing extensive damage. This includes five culvert failures leading to washouts that require extensive excavation and replacement of infrastructure.
New Damage Discovery
A new damage site was identified on December 16. Water has undermined and washed away parts of the highway and its roadside barrier due to a blocked culvert. The Ministry of Transportation and Transit reported that the damage is severe, but full evaluation will only occur once slope conditions stabilize and access is deemed safe.
Ongoing Repair Efforts
Currently, over 40 pieces of equipment and a team of 55 crew members, along with 15 technical experts, are dedicated to the repairs. According to the ministry, crews are working tirelessly, day and night, to restore Highway 3 as safely and swiftly as possible.
Snowfall and Weather Conditions
Snowfall remains a concern along Highway 3 and the Coquihalla Highway, with hazardous travel conditions expected. A snowfall warning has been issued due to a frontal system affecting these regions. So far, approximately 30 centimeters of snow have fallen on the Coquihalla Highway, with an additional 10 to 15 centimeters forecasted. Over Allison Pass, five centimeters have been recorded, with another five to ten centimeters anticipated.
Travel Advisory for Motorists
- Travelers are advised to allow extra time and drive cautiously.
- Winter tires or chains are recommended for safer driving conditions.
- Maintaining safe following distances is crucial due to reduced visibility.
As of now, the Coquihalla Highway remains closed in both directions between Hope and Merritt due to an unrelated vehicle incident. Assessments for reopening are currently underway.
